nommen, was entgegen der ung.
Kinder aufpassen..
[HW: X] Welche Dienststellung hatte ich denn in Ungarn???? Ueberhaupt keine, Aha, also sehen
Sie.... Wissen Sie wem ich in Ungarn unterstand??? Dem Befehlshaber der Sipe und
des SD und wem unterstand der widerum?

[HW: 171]
[?Page 21?]
[HW: F] But what do you say about the transp. deportation on 14 July, which is supposed to have taken place with the agreement of B with 15,000 Jews from the internment c[amp]
,,,,,,,,,,,,,and upon which an order of Horthy's followed to bring these people back again, that is after all a matter that must still be in your me-
mory????
Question: Were they brought back?? Yes, yes.
[HW: A] To my knowledge Horthy never intervened, ----- for I too undertook nothing that ran counter to the Hung. gov., because then I would have had a
2nd brake-block on my leg, Fesemeier.- Before I entered into new matters with E., I always and constantly obtained the certificate of no-objection from the higher SS and
Pol. leader as well as also the no-objection [certificate] from his superior, the Reich pleni-
potentiary, Dr. Fesemeier. And [it is] only after I received this no-objection [certificate], not in writing, orally sufficed indeed, [that] I knew from this or
that action no foreign-policy damage arises for the Reich, then I agreed to the
wish of Dr. L.E. Then, after consultation with B., the Hung. gendarmerie set the
matter in motion, only after I coordinated myself, i.e. procured the no-objection [certificate]
for me. Never would I have obtained such a one from Winkelmann or Fesemeier
if Horthy had set himself massively against it. unthinkable, for the foreign office
would have hit the RF one on the nut...
[HW: F] It is after all not said here "massively", but rather it is said here that
the Reich administrator issued the order, but then was after all in the execution
very wavering, because precisely his prime minister likewise did not so rightl[y]
want to go along with it....
[HW: A] Then it was no prohibition of the deportation.....
[HW: F] Just a moment, it is very well possible that the Reich administrator wants it, that also
the prime minister wants it, that they also took a decision, but said to themselves
however, in the last analysis the Wehrmacht is here, we must proceed cau-
tiously there, we must above all things be careful of this Eichmann, for
he can procure unpleasantnesses for us, exactly as Fesemeier reasoned from the standpoint of the
foreign office......exactly so could the Hungarians reason from the stand-
point of the real balance of forces too and can then say, if we
carry through an absolute prohibition with sharp means, then the Reich, which still
disposes of much greater means than we, can simply crush us.
[HW: X] It honors me extraordinarily that a Hung. prime minister is supposed to have been afraid of
me, it honors me extraordinarily that perhaps Horthy in his formulation
perhaps was cautious on account of the evil Eichmann---- yet despite everything I must
say that my office did not go beyond the official position of a desk officer,
and that I was never in the position to be able to, say, direct a Müller
or direct an RF, I could not even change the mind of my in itself very
kind-hearted friend Kaltenbrunner, with whom I was bound by a personal friendship,
I could not do that, that is Jew. talk [Jewish blather], more I cannot say about it
[HW: F] It is not about what you could or could not do, it is about that it is
completely logical that Horthy and the prime minister [feared] not you, but rath[er]
your office........ that they said to themselves, that is Reich leadership SS,
that is the chief of the replacement army,....... children, watch out..
[HW: X] What official position did I have then in Hungary???? None whatsoever, Aha, so [you] see
.... Do you know to whom I was subordinate in Hungary??? To the commander of the Sipo and
of the SD and to whom was he in turn subordinate?
